During my time as an English teacher in Cambodia, I created a short film blending reality and fiction about the genocide.
The Khemer Rouge regime led by Saloth Sar held power in Cambodia for three years, eight months and twenty days, from April 17, 1975 to January 6, 1979. During this short period, there were three million people died of execution, forced labors, starvation and diseases.
Communism was a popular political movement in the first half of the 20th century. Early communist perceived economic injustice and exploitation of the poor by the rich, of the illiterate by the educated, and the rural farmers by urban dwellers. Such idealism was powerful enough to persuade thousands of young Cambodian to join communist movement. The delusional group wanted a "modern and progressive" future for Cambodia in which everyone was:
Equal,
Without social classes,
No rich, no poor,
No diversity and ...
No crimes.
