What is Global Connections?

Global Connections is an innovative program under the Paul D. Coverdell World Wise Schools initiative, established in 1989, that bridges Americans with current and returned Peace Corps Volunteers to foster intercultural exchanges and deepen understanding of global communities. Managed by the Office of the Third Goal and Returned Volunteer Services, with support from liaisons at each post, the program invites Volunteers to participate by expressing interest during onboarding. Through various mediums such as Zoom, letters, emails, art, videos, or photo exchanges, Volunteers share their unique experiences and insights about their host communities, helping to achieve the Peace Corps' Third Goal of promoting global awareness and understanding among Americans. By building friendships, inspiring service, and sparking curiosity about the world, Global Connections not only enriches American perspectives but also strengthens the bonds between diverse cultures.

Hello Gabriel!

Thank you so much for all the videos!!! We enjoyed watching them all. Unfortunately, I did not have a way at the time to record the students watching them, but each class watched them all and we paused after each student to talk about what we learned about each student. They were intrigued that so many girls mentioned that want to be police officers! And I, of course, loved that so many want to be teachers.

The next class after we watched them, I had them work in pairs or groups to write short responses, asking your students more about themselves and Cambodia. I scanned those letters and am attaching them here.

Thank you for sharing all of the other videos as well. It looks like you are having a wonderful (and very productive) service time in Cambodia! How much longer are you there?

One of my students (from Bangladesh) noticed the written language on the board behind one of the students and said she thought it looked like Thai and that she believed Thai and Khmer are related languages. Is that right? In my mind, I have always linked Cambodia to Viet Nam (with no rhyme or reason), but see the languages are clearly different, though my Vietnamese student with Cambodian relatives says she believes the food and culture of Cambodia and Viet Nam to be somewhat similar. I would love to know more about this from you and your classes.

I hope you and your students are well! We will look forward to hearing from you again soon!

Karen
