This project presented a significant challenge for all the students involved, since Cambodian people, and in particular the younger generation, are often reserved, so stepping in front of the camera and talk about such an important topic, was a huge challenge, that most of them faced it for the very first time in life. However, this experience proved profoundly valuable as female students, because they were able to share and express their perspectives on being Cambodian women.
94 students from grades 7th through 12th, along with 12 female teachers, were invited to participate in on-camera interviews conducted in Khmer. These interviews aimed to explore the essence of womanhood in Cambodia. Each interview consisted of 5 to 6-minute films for each class, and these insightful vignettes were then shared on Facebook and Instagram with the goal of fostering understanding of Cambodian females among both local and global audiences.
Through the recordings, the role of females in Cambodian society became evident. We observed a significant workload discrepancy between males and females. Typically, women are responsible for both working outside the home and managing household duties such as childcare, cooking, cleaning, and other necessary tasks. This culture still maintains traditional models, reminiscent of Western societies of the past. In Cambodian, housework is undervalued as it's perceived as simplistic and lacking intellectual depth.
Cambodian women aim to highlight that they play a crucial role, prioritizing family needs above all else, which subsequently contributes to the overall success of society. They emphasize their unique ability to pay meticulous attention to detail, which enhances their effectiveness in various endeavors. Cambodian women need men encourage and support them since they have already a lot of responsibilities, both domestic and outdoor work. Currently the Cambodian women are in a crucial point in their history, because the want to raise their rights at the same time the want to preserve the traditional Khmer culture
The unveiling of a new video occurred daily starting from March 8th, totaling 10 episodes aired consecutively throughout March 2023. Collaborating with my Khmer language tutor, we translated the speeches into English to incorporate subtitles into each video, enhancing accessibility and impact.
Some classes took the initiative to collaborate with their local English teachers in preparing the students' speeches, ensuring that the most important points were effectively conveyed during the session.
